Is it Urgent or an Emergency? How to Know Where to Go for Care

Patients waiting for doctor in an urgent care clinic

We’ve all had those moments — a twisted ankle from stepping off a curb, a sudden fever on a Saturday night, or a small cut that might need stitches. And of course, these things rarely happen during regular office hours.

So, what should you do? Calling your primary care provider is always a smart place to start. However, if it’s after hours and you can’t reach them, it’s helpful to know your options — and choosing the right one can save you time, money, and stress.

Your After-Hours Care Options

If your doctor is unavailable after hours, it helps to know your after-hours care options. The best place to go depends on your symptoms and how serious they are. If you’re ever in doubt and believe your life is at risk — don’t hesitate. Call 911 immediately. For things like chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of stroke, you should always go to the emergency room.

But not every health issue needs an ER visit. For many non-life-threatening situations, urgent care centers and walk-in clinics are great choices. They offer fast, affordable care, often with shorter wait times and lower costs than the ER.
