What happens during the physical exam?

Depending on your health status, a standard physical examination may involve:

Updated Medical History
Your provider will inquire about any recent changes in your health history. This may cover medications, allergies, supplements, occupation, relationships, and recent surgeries.

Vital Sign Assessments
This includes measuring your blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate. The frequency of blood pressure checks typically ranges from once a year to every three years, depending on your medical background.

Visual Inspection
The provider will visually examine your physical appearance for any potential issues.

Physical Examination
The provider will inspect your ears, eyes, nose, and throat. They will also listen to your lungs and heart. The physical examination involves palpating various body parts for abnormalities and assessing your reflexes and motor functions.

Laboratory Tests
The provider may collect blood samples for various laboratory tests to complete the physical exam. These may include a complete blood count and a comprehensive metabolic panel, also known as a chemistry panel. The panel analyzes your blood plasma and can detect liver, kidney, immune system, and blood chemistry issues. This aids in identifying any underlying abnormalities that could signal a larger health problem.
