A Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals is a required health check for commercial drivers, set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Passing this physical is necessary to keep your commercial driver's license valid, ensuring both your safety and the safety of others on the road.
You may need a DOT physical if you operate a motor vehicle that holds more than 15 passengers or receive immediate payment for transporting over 9 passengers (including driver), operate the vehicle for interstate commerce, operate a vehicle with a gross weight of 10,001 lbs, or more, or transport hazardous materials in certain quantities.
What Does a DOT Physical Consist Of?
A DOT physical consists of several key evaluations to ensure you're fit to safely operates a commercial vehicle:
- Health History: You’ll complete a health history form detailing past and current conditions. If any conditions are noted, further information and evaluation will be required.
- Vision Test: You must meet specific vision standards, including 20/40 vision in both eyes, adequate peripheral vision, and color recognition for traffic signals.
- Hearing Test: You must hear a whispered voice from five feet away or have minimal hearing loss in one ear.
- Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate Test: Your blood pressure is checked, as elevated levels can affect the duration of your certification.
- Urinalysis: This test screens for underlying health issues, not drugs, by analyzing urine for specific indicators.
- Physical Exam: A thorough evaluation of your physical health, including strength, balance, flexibility, and grip, ensures you can handle the demands of driving safely.
