An X-ray is a painless procedure that uses a beam of radiation to create images of bones and certain organs. During the procedure, you may be asked to sit, stand, or lie down in a special room with the X-ray machine. Depending on the required image, you might need to hold your breath for a few seconds.
There is no number that is definitely safe, just as there is no amount of radiation is considered too much for a patient when the procedure is justified by the doctor. The doctor will consider the benefits versus the risk.

It is not recommended to undergo an X-ray during the first trimester of pregnancy. If your doctor approves an X-ray during your pregnancy, they will specify this on your requisition form.
