Getting Ready for Your DOT Physical

If you drive a commercial vehicle, you need a DOT physical every 24 months. This exam confirms you’re healthy enough to handle the demands of the job and keep everyone on the road safe.

At DOC-AID Urgent Care, we make DOT exams quick and stress-free. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

What the DOT Physical Includes

  • Health History – Fill out a form about past and current conditions, medications, and treatments.

  • Vision Test – Must see 20/40 in both eyes (with or without glasses/contacts) and have 70° peripheral vision.

  • Hearing Test – Must hear a whisper at 5 feet or meet hearing standards on an audiogram.

  • Blood Pressure & Pulse – High blood pressure may shorten certification to 3 months.

  • Urinalysis – Screens for glucose, protein, blood, and kidney function (not drugs).

  • Physical Exam – Checks strength, flexibility, balance, and overall ability to drive safely.

What to Bring

  • Completed DOT application form (print from FMCSA.gov)

  • Medical records, including specialist notes

  • Lab results if you have diabetes or other conditions

  • Glasses, contacts, or hearing aids (if you use them)

  • Medication list with names, dosages, and schedules

Quick Tips for Success

  • Keep your medical records up to date.

  • Bring all necessary paperwork to avoid delays.

  • Complete your portion of the DOT form before your visit.

Once you pass, you’ll receive a DOT medical card confirming you’re fit to drive.
